Awaken Our Hearts
We used to take a very funny elderly woman to Church from a “Home for the Aged” (they call it now), and was she ever entertaining! The Preacher had his large dry-erase board out and had marked on it some Greek words for different types of “love.” He was trying to get a point across as to how we cannot compare one love with another: he made a statement; then asked a question, not expecting an answer. The Pastor said, “Men, we love our wives, but not the same as chicken.” The question he then asked (not expecting an answer) was: “How many of us here love chicken?” What happened next was a shocking surprise to everyone!
This sweet little woman we took with us named, Ms. Leona hollered out so she’d make sure he heard her, as she waved her arm and her hand high in the air, “O, I do! I do!” She shouted. And continued, “Especially
Kentucky Fried Chicken!”
The congregation were trying very hard not to laugh, especially the teens, and to keep their composure, including the Pastor. Some Pastors are laid back and would have answered her, but this Preacher was in a serious mode which made it even funnier. About that time, Ms. Leona looked over at me and must have seen a stunned look on my face, because she tried to assure me it was alright when she hollered out again: “O, I love Jesus too!
But I sure love my chicken!” HAHAHA!!
Another time, months later, that same Pastor was teaching on “Tests & Trials” when he asked (without expecting an answer), “How many here like tests? None of us, right?”
There went Ms. Leona’s hand up in the air, and before I could put it back down for her, she went to waving it around and said loudly, “O, I do!” When I whispered to her we needed to be very quiet right now, Ms. Leona thought she should make her ‘love for tests’ understood, so she shouted out loud, “O, don’t get me wrong, I made C’s and D’s on them, but I still liked them.”
HAHAHA!! Isn’t that so funny?! What a joy Ms. Leona was,
such a joy!!
Now, a lot of us really do like chicken, but we don’t like tests, nor do we enjoy trials. But, what would you say, if I asked you, “Who wants to suffer?” Would you raise your hand? Not me. Jesus Himself went through many emotions on the Mount of Olives, in the Garden of Gethsemane when He knew what He would have to go through, so He prayed, ” Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not My will, but Thine be done. “ And there appeared an angel unto Him from heaven, strengthening Him.
And since we are His children, we are His heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God's glory. But if we are to share His glory, we must also share His suffering. Romans 8:17
And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts give in to over pleasing self, or overeating; and drunkenness, (that is, over satisfying); and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unexpectedly. For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth. Watch therefore, and pray always, that ye may be counted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man. Luke 21:34-36
Father in Heaven, I don’t want anyone I know, including my loved ones, to have to go through the horribleness that is coming on the earth, but they will if they will not follow Jesus now; so please give them warning signs all around and show them eternity begins now, with how we live now. Help us to love You and not love the world, nor the things in it, for they will soon melt away like wax. Awaken our hearts to know Your love, and to love You in return, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
