Called By Name

A dear friend of mine named Frank was having a birthday a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to bring a smile to his birthday lunch, so I looked up some jokes and cute stories. The following story came back to my mind yesterday, and it got me thinking: An out-of-towner drove his car into a ditch in a desolated area. Good thing was, a local farmer came to help with his big strong horse named Buddy. He hitched Buddy up to the car and yelled, "Pull, Nellie, pull!" Buddy didn't move. Then the farmer hollered, "Pull, Buster, pull!" Buddy didn't respond. Once more the farmer commanded, "Pull, Coco, pull!" Nothing. Then the farmer nonchalantly said, "Pull, Buddy, pull!" And the horse easily dragged the car out of the ditch. The motorist was most appreciative and very curious. He asked the farmer why he called his horse by the wrong name three times. The farmer said, "Oh, Buddy is blind and if he thought he was the only one pulling, he wouldn't even try!"
This story got me thinking: you may not be blind, but if you can't see a way out of your situation, you may not try. Maybe you haven't heard how someone who has been through what you are going through got out.
Now, did you notice Buddy didn't budge until he heard his master call him by name? It makes me think of our Master, Jesus. He said in His Word, the Bible, "I AM the good Shepherd. My sheep hear My Voice and they follow me, and I call them each by name." Isn't that so sweet?! I first heard Him call my name when I was 28 yrs. old, to follow Him.
GOD said Jesus was tempted in all points just as we have been, but He never sinned. He went through all the suffering so we would know He understands how we feel, and to know He can aid us in our sufferings. Jesus learned obedience by the things in which He suffered. By the things we suffer, He means for us to learn obedience to Him also. Jesus humbled Himself and became obedient... to the point of death, even giving up His life on the Cross for your punishment and mine.
In the story above, Buddy heard all the other names and it gave him the motivation to give it his all when it came his turn. May I present to you, Jesus heard your name and my name being called to have to endure the penalty and suffering of tormenting fear and eternal punishments, and that's what motivated Him to say, "Not My will, but Thine be done Father." Jesus didn't wait for someone else's name to be called before He would listen to the Voice of His Father. May we not wait for others to listen and obey GOD before we will. Even if we feel we are following Him alone sometimes, may we do it blindly if we have to, not seeing what's ahead or what will happen if we do. Amen.
