I Gave it my Best Shot
Back in my B.C. days (Before Christ that is), every time I would try to be something I wasn't, I would have a blooper. I thank GOD for it now. When my youngest son was going through his teenage years, we had started going to a huge church where there were well over 200 youth. I was teaching teenage girls, and my son was leading the praise and worship in the big room before all the classes divided up into small groups. We had moved from way out in the country, a little closer to the city where we had more neighbors. My son in his teen (trying to impress others) years, said to me one day, "Mama, why don't you try to act older and more sophisticated?" So, trying to please him and impress others, I gave it my best shot: I bought a pretty medium-length wig, penned my hair up real tightly to my head, put on the wig and a dress, took my son to school and had just parked in the far back of the Fiesta store parking lot, as it was already full that morning. The wind that morning had started picking up, but I didn't realize just how much it did till I opened my car door, and the door felt like it would fly off its hinges. The wind was roaring by now so I knew I would have to quickly make a run for it. When I stepped out of the car, I could tell immediately, I would have to hold my dress down, plus when I looked up toward where I was going, my wig would start slipping; so here I was walking into the fierce winds with one hand holding my dress down, the other carrying a purse,
while at the same time, concentrating on keeping my head down
and keeping my hair intact.
I managed well till I got closer to the entrance of the store. That's when I looked up again, and as soon as I did, "WHOOP!" there went my wig just like a tumbleweed off my head and across the parking lot it went at a speed of about 25 mph.
I must have hollered pretty loud because now other people were taking notice.
Looking back, I understand now, the people probably thought it was my little toy terrier dog I was chasing across the parking lot so franticly, because I was running pretty fast, while trying to keep my dress from going up over my head. I just couldn't get over how fast that wig was tumbling and going!! Every time I'd get a little close, I'd stick my foot way out so I could stomp on it. That's when someone probably called the humane society to report animal abuse. I chased that fuzz ball all the way to the next county it seemed like. I did catch it in the next parking lot down.
Needless to say, I didn't need anything from the store by then.
What are you chasing? Who are you trying to impress? Are you trying to be something or someone you aren't? It is an unhappy place; because you can never please people enough, nor yourself enough. But, when you lay all that aside to please the Lord, and realize you have one in your audience, and it is GOD your loving Lord you are living for, it is much more enjoyable to live.
Proverbs 31:30 Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord shall be praised.
